American Heart Association Supporting Undergraduate Research Experiences (SURE) program

January 08, 2019

Boston University (BU) is one of 5 US Medical Schools selected by the American Heart Association to pilot an underrepresented in medicine student summer research experience: the AHA Supporting Undergraduate Research Experiences (SURE) program. The program involves 10-12 weeks of mentored research, a $6000 stipend, room at board at BU, and the opportunity to travel to an AHA scientific meeting.

The program will be occurring in the broader context of multilevel mentoring available via the BU STARS program https://www.bumc.bu.edu/gms/academics/stars/, which is out of BU’s Graduate Medical Sciences, led by Isabel Dominguez. In addition, the Department’s Associate Chair in Underrepresented Ethnic /Racial Groups will participate in the mentoring. Our research assistant, Tinuola B Ajay, MBBS, also will provide additional hands on mentoring for the students. Emelia Benjamin MD, ScM will lead the program and will be involved in mentoring as well.

I am very hopeful that cardiovascular medicine/sciences will become more diverse, inclusive, and equitable; pipeline programs such as these seem like our best shot at accelerating the efforts.

The flyer for the student applicants mentee is attached.
